Sign of Grace, Sign of Glory

Catholics often make the Sign of the Cross casually, just as a nice gesture for beginning and ending their prayers. But when we learn to take this act seriously, signing ourselves frequently with faith and reverence, remarkable results can take place. We find ourselves doing measurably better in our Christian life: praying with more passion, resisting our bad inclinations more effectively, and relating to others more kindly.

The Sign of the Cross, after all, is not merely a pious gesture. It is a powerful prayer, a sacramental of the Church.
Scripture, the Church Fathers and saints, and Catholic teaching offer six perspectives on the Sign of the Cross that reveal why making it opens us to life-transforming graces. Once we grasp them, we can make the gesture with more faith and experience its great blessings.

Six Reasons to Make the Sign

1. A mini-creed. The Sign of the Cross is a profession of faith in God as He has revealed himself. It serves as an abbreviated form of the Apostles' Creed.
Touching our forehead, breast and shoulders (and in some cultures, our lips as well), we declare our belief in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are announcing our faith in what God has done -- the creation of all things, the redemption of humanity from sin and death, and the establishment of the Church, which offers new life to all. When we sign ourselves we are making ourselves aware of God's presence and opening ourselves to His action in our lives.
That much alone would be enough to transform us spiritually, wouldn't it? But there is much, much more.

2. A renewal of baptism. First-century Christians began making the Sign of the Cross as a reminder and renewal of what happened to them when they were baptized. It still works the same way for us.
When we sign ourselves we are declaring that in baptism we died sacramentally with Christ on the cross and rose to a new life with Him (see Rom 6:3-4 and Gal 2:20). We are asking the Lord to renew in us those baptismal graces.
We are also acknowledging that baptism joined us to the Body of Christ and equipped us for our role of collaborating with the Lord in His work of rescuing all people from sin and death.

3. A mark of discipleship. At baptism the Lord claimed us as His own by marking us with the Sign of the Cross. Now, when we sign ourselves, we are affirming our loyalty to Him. By tracing the cross on our bodies, we are denying that we belong to ourselves and declaring that we belong to Him alone (see Lk 9:23).
The Church Fathers used the same word for the Sign of the Cross that the ancient world employed to indicate ownership. The same word named a shepherd's brand on his sheep, a general's tattoo on his soldiers, a householder's mark on his servants, and the Lord's mark on His disciples.
Signing ourselves recognizes that we are Christ's sheep and can count on His care; His soldiers, commissioned to work with Him in advancing His kingdom on earth; and His servants, dedicated to doing whatever He tells us.

4. An acceptance of suffering. Jesus promised us that suffering would be a normal part of a disciple's life (see Lk 9:23-24). So when we mark our bodies with the sign, we are embracing whatever pain comes as a consequence of our faith in Christ. Making the sign is our taking up the cross and following Him (Lk 9:23).
At the same time, however, it comforts us with the realization that Jesus, who endured the Crucifixion for us, now joins us in our suffering and supports us.
Signing ourselves also announces another significant truth: with St. Paul, we are celebrating that our afflictions as members of the body of Christ contribute to the Lord's saving work of perfecting the Church in holiness (see Col 1:24).

5. A two-edged move against the devil. When the devil watched Jesus die on the cross, he mistakenly believed he had won a great victory. Instead, the Lord surprised him with an ignominious defeat (see 1 Cor 2:8). From the first Easter morning through the present, the Sign of the Cross makes the devil cower and flee.
On one level, then, making the sign is a defensive move, declaring our inviolability to the devil's influence. But, more importantly, the sign is also an offensive weapon, helping us reclaim with Christ all that Satan lost at the cross. It announces our cooperation with Jesus in the indomitable advance of the kingdom of God against the kingdom of darkness.

6. A victory over the flesh. In the New Testament, the word flesh sums up all the evil inclinations of our old nature that persist in us even after we die with Christ in baptism (see Gal 5:16-22). Making the Sign of the Cross expresses our decision to crucify these desires of the flesh and to live by the Spirit.
Like tossing off a dirty shirt or blouse, making the sign indicates our stripping ourselves of our evil inclinations and clothing ourselves with the behaviors of Christ (see Col 3:5-15).
The Church Fathers taught that the Sign of the Cross diffused the force of powerful temptations such as anger and lust. So, no matter how strongly we are tempted, we can use the Sign of the Cross to activate our freedom in Christ and conquer even our besetting sins.

Apply These Truths Now

Right now, you can imprint in your heart these six truths about the Sign of the Cross by making it six times, each time applying one of the perspectives.
First, sign yourself professing your faith in God.

Second, mark yourself remembering that you died with Christ in baptism.

Third, make the sign to declare that you belong to Christ as His disciple and will obey Him.

Fourth, sign yourself to embrace whatever suffering comes and to celebrate your suffering with Christ for the Church.

Fifth, make the Sign of the Cross as a defense against the devil and as an offensive advance of God's kingdom against him.

Finally, make the sign to crucify your flesh and to put on Christ and His behaviors.

Go through these six signings often in your morning prayer -- and watch the grace flow through this ancient sacramental in the days to come. TCA

Sigh. Classes has officially begun and here i am in my second year of my course. Results were out last week Friday and it was indeed Friday the 13th for me. What happen was i was ROBBED. Not robbed of my personal belongings but my marks. ENG 1020: Engineering Structures. Man, it was pretty depressing to see how much you've worked hard for it and its not paid off. Anyways, like usual, its no use crying over a spilt milk but i know i could have avoided spilling it.

Well, i have a problem with the new campus. Lunch. This week i had never taken my lunch in the cafe and i think its a good thing. Monday i had McDonalds, Tues was free lunch from the Buddy's Appreciation Lunch, Wed was kon-low pan mee near A&W Sunway and today was BBQ chicken rice in Orange. Damn-la..the food sold in the Monash cafe are worthless. Everything there are like 4-5 bucks and its tasteless including the drinks. Talking about drinks, the other day Des and I had teh-tarik for breakfast and it was as though i was drinking condense milk. SWEEEEEET! Furthermore the fella was suppose to tarik longer and do it a couple of times but he tarik-ed only once and then served us. Lolx.

This sem, Year 2 means twice the challenge this year. I have a subject ENG2092: Advanced Maths B which to date, i dun understand a single crap being taught. Laplace?..WTF. No matter how hard i try to understand it and paying attention in class, i just cant simply understand it. There's no pro to teach me. And also Fluid Mechanics. I mean although its a reading subject but i reckoned its gonna be another Dynamics-type of subject. Looks easy but difficult to score.

Ok, enough of the crap i've just mentioned. Let's move over to Man Utd! Yea, they're in Asia and played their first exhibition match against Urawa Reds, J-League Champions. I must say, Urawa played some exhilarating and beautiful game against Man Utd full team and if they (Urawa) ever played against Malaysia, pffttt i think they will tapao the Malaysian team seriously speaking. For heaven's sake Malaysia, do something to improve your game. Tomorrow they'll be in Seoul to play. All the best. Okay-la. End of post!

The week that Was..

Au revoir! This goes out to my classmate Edmund Hong Hueii Yik, known as "The Pro' among us and among his old school friends, Kemek (meaning flattened) who left to Australia to pursue his studies there to become a civil engineer since its not offered here in Monash Malaysia. Well before he left he invited a few of us for a lunch treat on Tuesday in Chilli's, Mid Valley. Yes, no typo-graphical error. Chill's. I mean who would have turned this down except for Desmond. Haha. Yea, so 10 of us all went for the wonderful lunch at 12 since that was the only time suited for all of us and James who's lunch break was that time. And as usual ,Kingston the man came the latest. Again i say, Edmund, all the best there and keep in touch dude! Edmund (R) and beloved, Erica

Desmond, look what u've missed..

The dessert

On Thursday, met up with half of the S2 gang comprising Shen Wei, Daniel, Shaun, Sinye and Pey Li for lunch again. This time its in 1-Utama and unfortunately its not Chilli's. Haha. It was at Dave's. Enjoyed the fettucinni i ordered and the best of all its half-priced! Well during weekdays, the pastas served are only at half-price. Cheapskate u may call it but what the heck! After lunch, this was the moment. TRANSFORMERS!! This highly anticipated movie was damn good. Out of 10 i would give it a solid 9.5. But sadly Sinye and Pey Li wasn't that impressed. After the show, i was like saying ' damn good damn good' and they were like ' Nice meh?'. I guess girls will always be girls after all.

Friday. Yes another day to be excited about cause i went to the the new Monash Campus for Buddy's Training. Words cant describe when i took a personal tour around the campus. McDonald's, San Fransisco, big labs, the 3-storey library, new pool tables in MUSA etc etc. I can proudly say i was one of the fellas to be the first to try out the pool table. Buddy's Training was fun. Our speaker, Suresh was the man of the day. His character-building talk was very inspiring and the fun-filled activities were fun. Took another tour around the campus, this time with Edwina and later collected our t-shirts to be worn during the orientation this Monday. But the most funny thing that day was Kingston. Where the heck was he? Haha. The night before he called me up to confirm the time for the training and everything looked promising. Came friday. he called Melvin stating that he was on the way and its SUPER-JAM. Btw, havent i told u people that 'on the way' and 'super-jam' was Kingston's favourite word if he wants to FFK (fong fei kei). True enough, he did FFK. Sighh.....

Yesterday, woke up damn early as usual to do the house-hold chores just as my parents left for work at 7. By the time i finished i went out to buy lunch for my family at a nearby restaurant near my place.Ok, here's the interesting part. Was lining up to buy cha-kueh and in front of me was white lady. All of a sudden this man out of nowhere appeared and started complaining in cantonese about the ba-chang (the triangle kueh wrapped with pandan leaves) he bought from the seller. Following was the conversation ensued;

Chinese Man: *cantonese*
White Lady: Excuse me, can u please have this conversation later after i buy my pau?
Chinese Man: U want to buy u buy la!
White Lady: Oh my, how rude of u. For your information u jumped the Q and started delaying things everyone here
Chinese Man: Eh, i'm just complaining ok. If ure not satisfied u can go back to your country!U dun belong here.
White Lady: See, i knew that was coming. Typical Malaysian!
Chinese Man: Aiya, lei sei hoi la!

I was flabbergasted. I didn't expect this man to scold her like that. I mean he was at fault and has no right to scold a tourist to go back to her country. But what to do. Some people are just so stupid and uneducated.Anyways enough said, that was one hell of an incident yesterday.

Moving over to sports, Man Utd has finally landed Carlos Tevez!Woooooot. Not boasting about anything but i think the Premiership will be Man Utd's again next season with Nani, Anderson and Owen Hargreaves just signed.

Talking about the new season, Man Utd has finally revealed their latest home kit and are gonna to don them during their Asian Tour this month.
